Our lone IT wolf in the Karachi office, Shiraz is kept busy by all our IT needs. Our Head of HR in Karachi, Jibran, told us: “Shiraz is a humble person, and always tries to help everyone with a smile. He is always very eager to learn new things and improve his skills. He is very easy going guy, with the quality of making friends quickly and spreading smiles. I am glad to have him on our team.”
Asad M., our Director of Information Services, had these great things to say about Shiraz and his work: “Shiraz is our Karachi IT team member. We needed someone in Karachi to fix IT issues there, which were getting out of hand. Since he joined, it seems like the issues are fixed by magic. He is always available to help developers and he brought a lot of stability to our Karachi office.”
We sat down for a talk with Shiraz, to learn all about the man behind the server.
Will you start with some background information about yourself? Tell us about your hometown.
I was born in Karachi, Pakistan, which is also called “The City of Lights.” I’ve been here my whole life.
Do you have a favorite place in the city? What are some of the things that you like about living in Karachi?
My favorite place is the beach. I often visit the seaside on off days with my friends. The thing I love about living in Karachi is the closeness people have. I live in an area called Malir and our houses are very close to each other, it’s just like we are a big family living together. All of us are very helpful and caring to each other, and if anyone runs into any problems there is the whole neighborhood to help out!
So Shiraz, tell us about your family! Do you live with them in Malir?
Yes, I live together with my mother, three brothers, and sister.
Do you all spend a lot of time together? What do you all do together in your free time?
When I am at home and not sleeping, I spend most of my time with my family.
We usually relax by telling each other how things are going at our offices. We also talk about things happening around our neighborhood and on the weekends we dine out together.
Do you have any personal hobbies that you enjoy spending your free time on?
In order to enhance my skills I am currently preparing for the CCIE Data Center Lab Certification. I’ll take that this coming January. I am also CCNA and CCNP Routing and Switching certified. When I was in university, I used to play snooker and also won several city-level competitions as well. It’s like pool, but has a bigger table and is a more complex game. It’s not that popular here, but we Pakistani players used to be number one in this sport. I was inspired by Mohammad Yousaf, who was the world champion.
Well Shiraz, what first got you interested in IT?
You can say it was something I loved from the start. I played computer games and such in the early days of my childhood, and that naturally drew me towards IT.
What were some of your favorite games as a kid?
I used to play pool and snooker on computers during my childhood. So that was a long time love as well.
So, where did you go to college and what degree do you have?
I graduated from Karachi University with a Bachelors in Commerce. I have several certifications in CISCO and Juniper that help me a lot with performing my job.
What’s your favorite thing about your job?
I like to work practically on routers and switches, so more hands-on type of work.
In your opinion, what are the key ingredients in guiding and maintaining successful business relationships?
I’m a background office person that works on the networks, but for everyone in the office together teamwork is always important. I think team members should work together to achieve common goals and resolve issues before they escalate. As for networking, if it went down, our whole setup would be disturbed, so we need to be on top of our game and be agile and always prepared.
What is a typical “day in your work life” like for you?
I monitor all the links for any network degradation, and try my best to keep the network running optimally. Besides that, I provide every kind of support from top to bottom for the Karachi team. That includes issues with headsets, mice, keyboards, screens, VPN connectivity, email, CCTV, printers, scanners, local database servers, and more. I am always available to help. Then, since I get home around 3:30 AM, when I reach home everyone is asleep, so I try to go to sleep as well.
What is your favorite: book, movie, and food?
My favorite book is Network Security Bible by Eric Cole. My favorite food is biryani, which is a local dish, and my favorite movie is Fast and Furious. It’s fun to watch fast cars, but no one should imitate them.
If Shiraz could play any character in a movie, he would want to be Super Man. His favorite quote is “To overcome evil with good is good, to resist evil by evil is evil.” If Shiraz could travel anywhere in the world, he’d love to go to Dubai and turn in a paper for CCIE certification. Shiraz is obviously passionate about networking, and that’s what makes him so good at his job. We hope he keeps that passion, and continues to help us do great things in the Karachi office!
